Poehler Comments on Non-Feminist Celebs

via huffingtonpost.com

We see many strong female celebrities...a quick glance at our blog will demonstrate that clearly. Why, then, do so many of these celebs deny being feminists?

Taylor Swift is one such celeb: “I don’t really think about things as guys versus girls. I never have. I was raised by parents who brought me up to think if you work as hard as guys, you can go far in life.”

But wait...when did feminism become about tearing down men as a way to raising women up? At its most basic definition, feminism is the belief that men and women should be equal. That doesn't mean that men should be brought down. It means, rather, that women should be raised up to the level that men find themselves in society.

Katy Perry also demonstrates this misunderstanding of feminism's definition: "I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women." I cannot put words in her mouth, but it's reasonable to infer that Perry believes that men and women should be equal if she believes that women are strong and powerful.

In her own denouncement of feminism, Carrie Underwood touches upon a different issue. "I wouldn't go so far as to say I am a feminist, that can come off as a negative connotation. But I am a strong female." This negative connotation may be the biggest obstacle facing feminism today. Feminism is often thought to be a radical movement because at one point, it was. But as times change, the movement changes. It's important to get back to the basics of feminism.

These women are incredibly strong, and in their own way may unknowingly promote feminism. It's a societal misunderstanding that leads them to distance themselves from these ideals.

Amy Poehler has difficulty seeing why her fellow strong lady celebs wouldn't support feminism. In an interview with Elle magazine, Poehler commented:
"But then they go on to explain what they support and live by -- it's feminism exactly. I think some big actors and musicians feel like they have to speak to their audience and that word is confusing to their audience. But I don't get it. That's like someone being like, "I don't really believe in cars, but I drive one every day and I love that it gets me places and makes life so much easier and faster and I don't know what I would do without it."
We need to erase the negative connotations that have glommed onto feminism to allow the movement to progress.

Katy Perry Tops the Charts and is a UNICEF Ambassador!

Katy Perry's single Dark Horse has climbed to the top of the Billboard 100. Dark Horse is the second number one hit from Katy Perry's Album Prism. The other number one hit was Roar, which spent two-weeks in the number one spot on the Billboard 100. The success so far of her album Prism hardly compares to her 2010 album Teenage Dream, which had FIVE chart-topping hits!

Katy's incredible music success is not unknown. What may be lesser known is how Katy is using her fame on behalf of the United Nations. In December 2013, Katy Perry was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Fund) is an organization that "works in over 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives, providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more" (see the website here). UNICEF is a United Nations program that was established in 1946. The United Nations is a unique organization, with 193 member nations, that aims to preserve international security and peace, protect human rights and the environment, while encouraging economic growth.

Katy Perry holds a special role, as stipulated by UNICEF. Katy Perry is charged with the task of engaging a younger cohort of people in UNICEF's work and helping young people determine solutions to issues such as child poverty, abuse and neglect. On the subject Katy said: "I believe young people have the power to change their own lives, with our help."
So why did the UN think Katy was such a great fit for the job? Katy has demonstrated dedication to UNICEF's mission. In April 2013, she visited Madagascar to tour a center for abused and abandoned children. Katy also allowed her hit single Roar to be used as the soundtrack to a promotional video for the second annual "International Day of the Girl Child," which occurs on October 11 (see here for more on Day of the Girl). As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Katy joins a slew of other celebs working on behalf of the UN including: David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Shakira and Serena Williams.

Ariana Grande Dazzles on the Cover of Teen Vogue Febuary 2014!

Ariana, the 20-year old emerging pop-sensation talks about her "break-out year" in this issue of Teen Vogue. Ariana's hit single "Yours Truly" from her debut album opened at #1 on Billboard. That hasn't been accomplished by an female artist since Ke$ha's 2010 album Animal! And if that isn't impressive enough Katy Perry recently described Ariana as "the best female vocal in pop music today."
