The Interesting Women of Suits

USA Network hit the jackpot when the decided to pick up season after season of Suits. Centered around two men, Mike and Harvey, the series take place in the competitive world of New York Law Firms and focuses on all of the legal and personal drama that arises. And while the ladies have swooned on sight for the powerful, intelligent, sassy Harvey Spector as much as genius, young, and inexperienced Mike Ross, the real stars are all the women. Not only does the female cast prove crucial to the development of the plot, but they are all strong, independent, and accomplished in their own right. They get right on in there and challenge the men at every turn. So today's post is for Jessica, Rachel, and Donna.

via

A paralegal at Pearson-Hardman law firm, the only reason she isn't the best attorney in practice is because she's not that great at taking tests. She's Mike's guide and is constantly demanding and earning the respect of all her colleagues. Her research skills and knowledge of the firm are crucial to Mike's success and I think law school/ more power is in her future....

Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres)

The managing partner of the Pearson-Harman law firm, Jessica does not take no for an answer. She has been head of this firm for years and won't let anyone get in her way. She isn't afraid to tell the partners when they're wrong, especially cocky and arrogant Harvey Spector. Her strength, elegance, and determination have kept her at the top, and she won't let anyone take that from her....

 Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty)
Harvey Spector's right hand woman, Donna is the sassiest and wittiest character on the show. She is not only straight forward, emotional, and sarcastic, but she blurs the line of hierarchy by proving that when you're good at your job everyone will respect you. From the highest to lowest worker at Pearson- Hardman, everyone knows not to mess with Donna. She knows everything and won't hesitate to put you in your place with her pointed words.

Madonna Supports Girls' Education

1C7275371-130508-madonna-painting.blocks_desktop_large.jpg

Best known for her amazing performances and lifelong career as a talented singer, Madonna has been breaking barriers for decades. Most recently, she sold an original Fernand Leger painting from her private collection to raise funds for girls' education in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries that have been plagued by war violence. Bringing in a whomping $7.16 million for "Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge" (pictured above), the painting was sold in New York a few months ago.

Madonna has owned this painting since she bought it back in 1990. She said that by selling her art, she was able to combine her two loves: art and education. As such, she was able to raise funds for Ray of Light Foundation, a non-profit who seeks to educate street children and impoverished farmers in a vocational format.

Madonna was quoted saying, "I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls' schools. We don't have time to be complacent." More than anything, her very public selling has brought media attention and politicians attention to the subject at hand.

The mother of two children from Malawi, she already has plans to open 10 schools in southern Africa. As she said, "I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable- educating girls!"

images.jpgBetween the Grammy's and the Golden Globes, it's easy to get sucked into the glamour of Hollywood. And that's okay. Enjoy the fashion reviews, the "who wore what" columns, and baby bump speculations. But when you're tired of the same old stuff, don't forget there are other awards being given out there in the world.

Back in September, SELF magazine held their 6th annual "Women Doing Good" banquet to honor those women who embrace their celebrity power and use it to help others. 2013's honorees ranged across the board in areas of health, humanitarian interest, education, and female empowerment.

However, the big name of the year is that of "The Educator," known to the world as SHAKIRA.

I thought Shakira was a singer?
While the majority of Americans know Shakira as a singer and dancer, her home country's youth know her as a warm person who fights to improve education. Born and raised in Colombia, Shakira has built schools and campaigned to change education policies so that more children have access to schooling. To date, she has opened six schools in the poorest areas of Colombia where up to 1/3 of the population is deemed to be below the poverty line. The seventh is currently being built in Cartagena.

Why does she do all of this?
After growing up in one of the poorest areas of Colombia, she realized how much needed to be done. When Shakira became successful, she vowed to help those who couldn't help themselves.

As she has said:
images.jpg" Investing in education is the most efficient tool to fight violence. Investing in our kids really is our only hope. They're our world's greatest resource. Not oil, not gas. It's the children of the world."

What are her causes?
After releasing her third album at age 18, she began the Pies Descalzos Foundation in Colombia, opening a US counterpart named The Barefoot Foundation just a few years later. She currently serves on President Obama's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador!

Did you know about Shakira's foundations? Or can you think of another Celebrity that has done work to help the poor? Let us know in the comments section!
